INTRODUCTION OF DEPARTMENT

The Institute of T.B and Chest Medicine was established in 1920.  Prof. Muhammad Saqib Saeed is heading the Institute since 2011. This Institution was renovated in 2012. The Institute is equipped with X-Ray, ultrasound machines, video bronchoscope, video thoracoscope, fluorescent microscope, sleep lab, Gene XPERT MTB/RIF machine and separate MDR-TB diagnostic and treatment facilities. A 50 seated Seminar room fully equipped with audiovisual facilities has been built. The Institute of chest medicine houses 66 patients and runs a very active outpatient department catering for over 60,000 patients a year. The institute is running postgraduate training programs for MD (Pulmonology), FCPS (Medicine), FCPS, MCPS & DTCD in Pulmonology and undergraduate training for MBBS.”

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS
  1. Early detection, treatment and control of pulmonary tuberculosis and other Respiratory disorders.
  2. To enhance the training of undergraduate & postgraduate students and hand on practice on bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, thoracocentesis, lung biopsies.
  3. To promote the research work in the department.
  4. To improve the team work for better management of patients and arranging multidisciplinary team to meet the motto ALTAPETE” of King Edward Medical University, Lahore.

Work completed:

  1. Prevalence of anemia in COPD.
  2. Douge Potter Syndrome.
  3. Role of Alkaline phosphate in differentiating tuberculous from non tuberculous pleural effusions.

 

Published:

  1. Identification of frequent exacerbator phenotype in local COPD patients: Development of predictive model for frequent exacerbator.
  2. Relationship between ABG and VBGs in patients presenting with COPD.
  3. Role of GeneXpert/MTB-RIF in diagnosing tuberculous pleural effusion
  4. Diagnosis and treatment of abdominal tuberculosis in tertiary care setting.


Current Projects:

  1. The Effectiveness of Aspirin in reducing the number of exacerbations in patients of COPD.
  2. Serum Magnesium level in patient with acute exacerbation of COPD.
  3. Yield of USG Guided Biopsy in peripheral malignancy.
  4. To co-relate the role of B-lines on transthoracic USG with HRCT in patients of ILD.
  5. To characterize the pleural effusion on chest USG and co-relate with pleuroscopic biopsy.
  6. To determine the role of HRCT in sputum smear negative patients of suspected TB
  7. The Effectiveness of Atorvastatin in reducing the number of exacerbations in patients of COPD.
