Brief
History and Introduction
The present famous Mayo Hospital, was completed in 1870 and was
opened in 1871. In the same year a “Hakim Class” was
introduced for people with some knowledge of “Unani System”
with emphasis on Anatomy and Surgery. Later on in 1887, the existing
building of Pharmacology (the oldest block of this institution)
was constructed. In 1983, as the number of students increased upto
322, an additional Professor for the chair of material medica (now
known as (Pharmacology) & Pathology was appointed. A training
class for the “ward boys and compunders was introduced in
1894 and 1901 respectively. In 1906-11, due to shifting of the chemical
examiner from the college, separate museum of Materia medica was
created. In 1935, the Principal of this prestigious institute. Nelson
Harper emphasized on construction of Pharmacology building but it
could not be completed till 1936.
In
1937-38, Materia Medica block was extended and hence Pharmacology
emerged as a separate department. Prof. Col. Rai was crowned as
the first head of the department. Later on Prof. Amir Chand became
the second head of the Pharmacology department.
Then
the renowned physician Col. Ilahi Bukhsh headed the department from
1937 – to – 1947. During this period Pharmacy department
of the Punjab University, Lahore started working in K.E. Medical
College, which later on shifted back to its original Alma matter
in 1950.

partition of following eminent professors rendered their meritorious
services as head of the department

Pharmacology Departments is of the oldest, being in the University
built in 1936. Building of department has 9 offices, one laboratory
for experimental pharmacology, one laboratory for pharmacy practical,
Museum and there is one lecture theater for 150 students.
Pharmacology
& Therapeutics are taught to 3rd year MBBS students. BDS 2nd
year class is attached to the department for the last 76 yeas. Previously
classes of nurses and dispensers were also used to be held in the
department. M.Phil students who have completed their course work
execute their research work in the department.. Various research
projects are being completed by teaching staff. Journals Club meeting
is held on weekly basis. Professional examination of MBBS, BDS and
M.Phil are conducted in the department.
Head of Department is Incharge and chairman of other health activities
like formulation of health formulary, P.V.M.S. inspection of pharmaceutical
firms and participation in the procurement of quality medicine for
the hospitals.
