East Surgical Ward is one of the oldest units of Mayo Hospital, built in 1871. This unit has the privilege of being headed by many famous surgeons and has a history of being center of excellence in head and neck surgery. Currently, unit is being headed by Professor Syed Asghar Naqi, who has a great interest in undergraduate and post graduate education. East Surgical Ward is a competent team comprising of Dr. Ameer Afzal, Associate Professor, Dr. Nazeer Ahmad and Dr. Zeeshan Sarwar, Assistant Professor and Dr. Rana Sohail, Dr. Kashif Alvi and Dr. Fakhir as Senior Registrars. There are 16 Post Graduate trainees and 22 House Officers.


       Service to humanity with a commitment for excellence in medical education and research, providing medical students with state of the art knowledge, skills and attitude to deliver the highest standards of health care to the people.

East Surgical Ward has firm belief in teaching and learning of the future surgeons. Ward is actively involved in undergraduate and post graduate teaching as well as teaching in allied health sciences. Regular classes and ward teaching is mandatory for undergraduates. Post graduate trainees of MS & FCPS are being trained on ward rounds, journal club meetings, clinicopathological conferences, and morbidity and mortality meetings.  Research topics for post graduate trainees are regularly followed and monitored. Training of higher surgical skills for our trainees had been of utmost importance. Hands on workshop on surgical skills have been carried out and further workshops will be a regular feature.


Published Research:

  1. Knowledge, attitude and practices amongst the Pakistani females towards breast cancer screening programme (JPMA 65: 1075; 2015)
  2. To compare the outcome of Lobectomy and Isthmusectomy with and without drain in Thyroid Surgery (PJMHS 9:847;2015)
  3. Case report: gall stone ileus: a complication least expected (journal of Surgery palerotan (international) Jan-Mar 2015.

Current Projects:

  1. Presence of Helicobacter Pylori in gall bladder tissue and bile and its histological correlation.
  2. Outcome of thyroid surgery by harmonic scalpel.
  3. Outcome of laparoscopic cholecystectomy by harmonic dissection.
  4. Outcome of Desarda repair of inguinal hernia.
  5. Outcome of inguinal hernia mesh repair under local anesthesia.

Outcome of closed lateral internal sphincterotomy for chronic anal fissure under local anesthesia.


A learning resource center is being developed in ward which will be a source of reading materials and hands on exercises. A well-ventilated class room with audio visual aid is also working.


East Surgical Ward has been a center of excellence for all general surgical procedures including trauma and oncology. Ward has been delivering this service with 31 bed male bay and 20 bed female bays. Ward also has three beds HDU and 5 bed infected bay.
