Workshop on virtual reality arthroscopic sports surgery was hosted by orthopaedic surgery Unit-II KEMU/MHL

A workshop on “Virtual Reality Arthroscopic Sports Surgery” was hosted by the Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery Unit-II, King Edward Medical University, Mayo hospital Lahore under the leadership of Prof. Faisal Masood and Course Director, Dr. Mumraiz Salik Naqshband. Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz, the Vice-Chancellor of King Edward Medical University, graced the occasion as the chief guest and inaugurated the workshop.

The primary objective of this unique workshop was to provide education and hands-on training to Orthopaedic Surgeons while exploring the future of Orthopaedic surgery training through cutting-edge technology. Prof. Faisal Masood, the Head of Orthopaedic Unit-II, extended a warm welcome to the workshop participants and stressed the importance of the latest technology in surgical specialties. The audience received insights into the advantages of simulators and virtual reality in surgery, from practicing complex procedures to planning difficult surgeries, ultimately enhancing patient safety and outcomes.

Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz shared his experiences and expertise in the field of Robotic Surgery, emphasizing the significance of modern technology like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and simulations. He mentioned that the Robotic Surgery facility would soon be available at King Edward Medical University as PC1 of Robotic Surgery has been approved at Mayo Hospital, Lahore. This development will also benefit the Department of Orthopaedics.

Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz commended the efforts of Prof. Faisal Masood and his team for providing an opportunity for participants to explore futuristic approaches that enhance safety and precision for surgeons and, in turn, benefit patients. Prof. Ayyaz even operated the apparatus himself and appreciated the experience.

A highlight of the event was a real-time simulator demonstration by Dr. Mumraiz Salik, who is a trained Arthroscopic surgeon. He explained various steps and benefits of this module, and participants had the chance to experience and perform virtual procedures. This workshop was part of an ongoing “Continuous Teaching & Training Initiative of Orthopaedics” by the Department of Orthopaedics, KEMU / MHL, and it attracted faculty members, residents, and students.
