INTRODUCTION OF DEPARTMENT
South Surgical Ward (Surgical Unit IV) was established as an independent unit in Mayo hospital, Lahore| Est 1871) in 1962 as the fourth general surgical unit, It remains a great seat of learning and numerous eminent surgeons trained in the unit are serving humanity in every nook and comer of the world.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
– The vision of unit is to impart quality education, practicing evidence-based medicine and state of the art skills for better health care delivery as well training of Surgeons for Tomorrow.
– The mission is to train doctors with strong Fibers of professionalism, dedication, commitment, altruism and empathy, so they can meet any challenges in the field of medicine

HEALTH SERVICES / STATE OF ART FACILITIES
Acute and Emergency care
The department receives trauma and acute surgical emergency cases for 24 hours on Saturday and 12 hours on Thursdays. The department has ATLS certified faculty and doctors who take on trauma victims. The department has also being involved in management of recent blast and terror incidents in the city. The unit specializes in acute abdominal and peripheral vascular emergency cases.
Surgical Oncology
The unit has special interest in caring for the cancer patients and has established a dedicated Tumour registry office in the department in the unit for the last several years. The Tumour registry office also (known as the TR office continues to record new patient’s data as well as is following up all cases registered in the department for the past several years (since 2007). The biggest number of patients being admitted for treatment are far breast carcinoma. Other major cancer patients suffer from hepatobiliary and tissues tumours.
Advanced Laparoscopic Services
The department has its first laparoscopic gastrectomy in the Month of February 2015 during the 7th International Cancer Surgery, Conference and Mr. Khursheed Akhter from UK performed the surgery. Department regularly performs laparoscopic liver & retroperitoneal biopsies, Appendectomies, Cholecystectomies, SEPS and IPOM procedures.
