INTRODUCTION OF DEPARTMENT
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at King Edward Medical University/Mayo Hospital is one of the largest and most renowned departments in the country, providing comprehensive care for a wide range of maxillofacial conditions since 1999. With a team of highly qualified Faculty and experienced maxillofacial surgeons, the department is rendering remarkable surgical services to the patients, and at the same time; department takes lead as one of the largest centers for teaching & training of the post graduate doctors of this field. It offers elective surgical care to patients of Oral Cancer/Oncology, Facial trauma, Jaw cysts & Tumors, Facial Deformities, Oro-fascial infections, Salivary gland disorders. Moreover, a round-the-clock, 24/7 Maxillofacial Emergency service is provided which is the hallmark of the department!
For the past 27 years, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has been serving the people of Pakistan, especially Punjab, as a leading center for specialized surgical care, education, and research. Established in 1999 under the visionary leadership of Prof. Riaz Ahmad Warraich, the department laid strong foundations of clinical excellence and academic advancement. It was further strengthened by Prof. Nabeela Riaz(Ex HOD), who played vital role in expansion of the unit into a 50-bedded facility & a dedicated 24/7 OMFS emergency service.
Today, under the leadership of Dr. Malik Ali Hassan Sajid (Assoc. Professor), the current Head of Department, the legacy of progress continues. He is a graduate of the prestigious de’Montmorency College of Dentistry Lahore & an OMFS trainee of Mayo Hospital,. Dr. Malik Ali Hassan, other than FCPS, also holds MFDS RCPS (Glasgow), with rich international surgical experience at MOH–Saudi Arabia and Aga Khan Hospital, Tanzania. He also holds MHPE (UHS) and a DHEP – Diploma in Healthcare Ethics & Professionalism (LUMS), reflecting his dedication to both clinical excellence and medical education. Formerly, he also worked as Professor & Headed Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry Lahore. He has more than 20 national & international publications to his credit. The OMFS department has 3 Assistant Professors, actively performing their clinical & academic activities.

- The OMFS department keeps on arranging symposia, Seminars & Mock Exams by inviting local & international OMFS Faculty round the year to further teaching & training to the undergraduate & postgraduate doctors
HEALTH SERVICES / STATE OF ART FACILITIES
- The department provides 24/7 emergency surgical services at Mayo Hospital and operates a 50-bed inpatient unit, where complex cases such as maxillofacial trauma, oral cancer, jaw cysts and tumors, salivary gland diseases, TMJ disorders, Dentofacial/orthognathic deformities, and congenital anomalies are managed using modern, multidisciplinary approaches. The department is accredited both for FCPS-II & MDS training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery since 2001.
- This department has produced the maximum FCPS & MDS OMFS Surgeons which are more than any single unit in Pakistan. Plastic Surgery/ENT Residents also undergo their CPSP rotation in the OMFS department. .
- OMFS department operates 2 GA lists on Mondays & Thursdays and an LA list on every Friday.
- OPD patients are managed by Faculty & HOD 3 days a week on Tuesday, Wednesday & Saturday.
