Department of Medical Oncology and Radiotherapy KEMU/MHL Organized Colon Cancer Symposium

“Colon Cancer Symposium KEMU 2023″
Colon cancer is third most common cancer worldwide and 4th commonest cause of cancer related mortality. Department of Medical Oncology and Radiotherapy King Edward Medical University / Mayo Hospital Lahore organized ” Colon Cancer Symposiun” at audiovisual Conference Room of King Edward Medical University, in collaboration with ” Society of Medical Oncology of Pakistan ( SMOP).
The event started with recitation of Holy Quran, followed by brief introduction of Department by Dr. Muhammad Abbas Khokhar.
Vice Chancellor, KEMU, Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz was patron in chief.
Honorable Health Minister Prof. Dr. Javed Akram was Chief Guest of the occasion. Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal (Vice- Chancellor Fatima Jinnah Medical University) and Prof. Dr. Arshad Cheema (Ex. Dean of surgery) participated as guests of Honor.
First session was moderated by Dr. Zeeshan Sarwar, Associate Professor of South Surgical Ward, After initial Lecture on epidemiology, Colon Cancer Prevention and early detection by prof Saira Afzal Dean of Public health, Prof. Dr. Israr ul Haq Toor give a talk about colon cancer diagnosis, Prof. Dr. Syed Asghar Naqi discussed the role of surgery in colon cancer.
Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz delivered an excellent lecture on minimal invasive surgery in rectal cancer. The emerging technology of robotics have brought a revolution in very advance and difficult cases which were considered inoperable in the past. Professor Mahmood Ayyaz also demonstrated the robotic skills in his prerecorded videos and he is determined to bring this technology in Mayo hospital where new lot can be trained and the poor cancer patients may obtain maximum benefit due this novel and very effective robotic surgery. Prof. Dr. Zeba Aziz, a great teacher of Medical Oncology was Guest of Honor of the session while Professor Qamar Ashfaq (LGH), Dr. Adil Iqbal (West Medical Ward) were session chairs.
First session was followed by tea break.
Second session of the event covered topics related to role of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) by Dr. Muhammad Abbas khokhar. This laboratory test of NGS has revolutionized the diagnosis and management of colon cancer with novel targeted therapies and immunotherapies and their use in advanced and metastatic cancers has significantly improved the life expectancy, the other lectures included total neo-adjuvant therapy, adjuvant systemic therapy and novel therapies in colorectal cancer. The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Shandana Tariq (South Medical Ward) , Prof. Arif Nadeem ( SIMS) while talks were delivered by Dr. Muhammad Abbas Khokhar, Dr. Sadia Sadiq ( INMOL), Dr. Kausar Bano ( Head of Oncology, Jinnah Hospital Lahore), Dr.Umme Kalsoom( Head of Medical Oncology, Shaukat Khanam Memorial Hospital, Lahore) while Dr.Amjad Zafar ( Assistant Professor of Oncology, Khawaja Safdar Medical college, Sialkot) was moderator of session.
Last session was moderated by Dr. Sobia Yaqub ( Consultant Medical Oncologist, Mayo Hospital Lahore) while Dr. Ali Waheed Goraya ( Assistant Prof of Radiotherapy, Mayo Hospital Lahore) and Dr. Hafsa Naseer from Oncology dept Hameed Latif Hospital presented cases which was followed by a very healthy discussion by panelists from various specialties.
In his talk, Prof. Dr.Javed Akram , Health Minister of Punjab, emphasized on need of screening and early detection of colon cancer. He also announced fellowship program in Colorectal Cancer that will be a level 4 training program which shall be included in CIP and MIT programs offered by King Edward Medical University and CPSP.
At the end, shields and certificates were distributed among the guests and participants by Worthy Chief Guest and the symposium was conducted by the vote of thanks by the Vice Chancellor KEMU Professor. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz.
