Department of Medicine, King Edward Medical University, Lahore celebrated World Diabetes Day 2023 on 14th November, 2023.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated worldwide on 14th November to create awareness for this important medical condition. The slogan for 2023 is Know Your Risk, Know Your Response.

Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz, Vice Chancellor of King Edward Medical University graced the occasion as Chief guest. Prof. Ijaz Hussain, Pro-Vice Chancellor, KEMU, and Prof. Syed Asghar Naqi, Registrar KEMU joined as special guests. The activity started with an intra-departmental quiz on different aspects of diabetes. Teams from East, West, South, and North Medical Units, each comprising 3 PGRs of the respective units participated. After a close competition, the team from East Medical Unit was declared the winner.
Prof. Israr ul Haque Toor, Head of the North Medical Unit, highlighted the alarmingly high and rising number of diabetics all over the world as well as diagnostic pitfalls in Diabetes. Prof Shandana Tarique, Head of South Medical Unit, talked about the complications of Diabetes and the importance of prevention. Prof Adil Iqbal, Head of West Medical Unit, commented on the individualized management approach in diabetic patients. Prof Muhammad Imran, Head of the East Medical Unit and Dean Faculty of Medicine, talked about strategies for Diabetes prevention and reversal at individual and national/international levels.
Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz, Vice Chancellor, of King Edward Medical University, and Prof Dr Syed Asghar Naqi gave a comprehensive talk about the role of metabolic surgery in the management of Diabetes.
Dr. Umar Waraich talked about bariatric surgery and minimally invasive surgery.
The academic session was followed by an awareness walk with the reiteration of commitment to prevent and control the diabetes epidemic.
