“Pre-Sportscon Hands On Cadaveric Knee Workshop with Live Surgery Sessions and Practice on Knee Simulators ” was conducted by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Unit-I MHL/ KEMU. This hands-on interactive course was inaugurated by the honorable Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz, Vice Chancellor of King Edward Medical University, and Patron in Chief of the course.
The course with the theme “from pain to Mobility” was organized by the Department of Orthopedic Surgery Unit-I, KEMU / MHL under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Mirza in collaboration with Anatomy Department KEMU. The course was taught by the International senior faculty of Dr. Umer Butt and Dr. Kamran Butt & National faculty of Dr. Usama bin Saeed, Dr. Reshad Khan, Dr. Amir Sohail, Dr. Mumraiz Naqshband Dr. Naveed Ali Shair and Dr. Raza Ahmed having vast experience of treating sports surgery patients.
This course comprised interactive lectures, case discussions with experts, hands-on practice on the cadaveric knee, hands-on practice on knee simulators, and live surgery sessions of ACL repair and Meniscal repair with a particular focus on hands-on skills for Emerging Sports surgeons with themes from pain to Mobility Under the banner of the Pakistan Orthopaedic Association, Arthroscopy, and Sports Surgery Society Pakistan, the Pakistan cricket board shapes active lifestyles.
The course director was Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Akram and Chief Organisers were Senior Registrar Dr. Ali Raza Sherazi, senior Registrar Dr. Faheem Faruki, and Dr. Sardar waqas azam. The session was formally inaugurated with the recitation of the Holy Quran. After a brief introduction to the sports medicine course Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, Course chairman, welcomed the faculty members, distinguished guests, and participants in his opening address.

Vice Chancellor emphasised that due the inrcreasing number of trainees and reduction in working hours, the hands on skills training in models and cadavers is of great importance as this provides a near surgical training. Prof Dr Faisal Masood delivered a keynote lecture on basic knee arthroscopy which was both enlightening and informative to the participants. Prof. Dr. Farhana Sajjad Head of Anatomy Department KEMU taught the Anatomy of knee joint emerging sports medicine surgeons. Dr. Umer Butt, Chairman of the knee meeting UK, chairman SICOT Sports Committee, and Director of Sports Surgery Fellowship POA, did an audiovisual Demonstration of Diagnostic Knee Arthroscopy and being an authority on the subject, he shared his valuable decades-long experience dealing with patients and teaching sports medicine to doctors.
Prediction of risk factors of injuries in elite athletes was taught by Prof. Dr. Kamran Butt, a fellow of the faculty of sports medicine in Ireland and Chairperson of the Arthroscopy and sports surgery society Pakistan. Dr Usama bin Saeed fellow of arthroscopy POA UK taught therapeutic arthroscopic interventions from repair to reconstruction. The best techniques of portals in knee arthroscopy from basic diagnostic to advanced procedures were covered in detail by Dr. Naveed Assistant Professor from Lahore General Hospital Dr. Sohail Saleem Ex-Director of Sports Medicine Pakistan cricket board taught a spectrum of knee injuries in sports/athletes.
Dr. Reshad A. Khan senior consultant arthroscopy at Naseer Hospital demonstrated the use of instruments and equipment in knee arthroscopy. Dr Amir Sohail Assistant Professor Jinnah Hospital Lahore taught tips & tricks in basic knee arthroscopy in a crispy manner.Dr. Mumraiz Naqshband Associate Professor, MHL arranged two live surgery sessions of ACL repair & Meniscal repair which were performed by him along with Dr. Raza Ahmed, Dr. Usama bin Saeed and Dr. Amir Sohail. Prof. Dr. Kamran butt & Dr. Reshad A Khan addressed the participants during live surgery sessions and shared their experience of arthroscopy and various practices of knee surgery across the world.
Dr. Amir Sohail and Dr. Usama bin Saeed in a panel of experts answered questions from all participants. Hands-on practice on the cadaveric knee and artificial knee simulators was arranged by Dr. Muhammad Akram, Dr. Ali Raza Sherazi, Dr. Faheem Faruki, and Dr. Sardar Waqas Azam at the dissection Hall Anatomy Department KEMU. The stations were managed by teams of Prof. Dr. Kamran butt, Dr. Amir Sohail, Dr. Usama bin Saeed, and Dr. Arshan Munir Chaudhary.
The session was attended by the teaching faculty, emerging sports Surgeons, and Postgraduate residents of Orthopaedic Surgery from various Hospitals of Punjab, KPK, AJK, and the federal capital after the session, Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz also presented shields and certificates to the course faculty and participants and appreciated their efforts. It was followed by a group photograph of the faculty and attendees with the Vice Chancellor, KEMU.
