INTRODUCTION OF DEPARTMENT

Unit-II is one of three independently working units in Lady Willingdon Hospital. LWH is the largest maternity hospital in Pakistan, having 235 beds. It has been affiliated with King Edward Medical College (University) since 1933. It is fully recognized for training by the HEC, PMDC, CPSP and the RCOG, UK.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The unit admits about 16,000 patients per year. Our aim is to provide state of the art services to the OPD and emergency patients coming to our institution. We drain a population of 15 million, not only from Lahore but also neighbouring districts of Central Punjab. We are always striving to serve the ailing humanity with the best of our knowledge and skills. We also provide extra ordinary teaching and training programme for both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

The unit has structured training program comprising of ward rounds, case discussions, skill demonstrations, journal club meeting and mortality and statistics meetings.

We organise preparatory courses twice yearly for FCPS and MS candidates. Quarterly workshops are conducted for hands-on skills like perineal tear repair, newborn resuscitation, obstetrical emergencies drills and post-partum intrauterine device insertion. Seminars were organized for world Diabetes Day, International Women Day and Breast Cancer Awareness.

RESEARCH

Numerous research papers have been published in national and international journals. Most recent are:

  • Woman trial (role of transamine in P.P.H.)
  • Role of P.P.I.U.C.D in population planning & birth spacing
  • Comparison of balloon tamponade and vaginal packing in primary PPH
  • Positive predictive value of cerebro placental ratio in post date pregnancies
  • Uterine rupture maternal and fetal outcome

PROJECTS / DEPARTMENTAL EXTENSION /SPECIAL FEATURES

We have recently completed projects of up gradation and renovation of our labour ward, nursery and intensive care unit. These facilities have been uplifted to give modern look and provide better facilities for our patients.

Laparoscopic state of the art theater has been inaugurated and is functional now. However, we are always struggling with large number of patients which exceeds our bed strength.

HEALTH SERVICES / STATE OF ART FACILITIES

Being tertiary referral center, hospital has a work load reflecting all obstetrical emergencies like placental previa, post partum haemorrhage, eclampsia, rupture uterus and induced septic abortions. Specialized gynaecological procedures are regularly performed like fistula repair, vaginal hysterectomy, vaginoplasty, sling procedure for U-V prolapse and complicated surgeries for endometriosis and gynaecological oncology. State of art equipment for colpascopy, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy is available in hospital.

The hospital provides unique features both for patient care and teaching of resident doctors.
