(44th Annual International Conference KEMU—Post Conference Workshop)
This workshop was successfully conducted on 19th and 20th December 2024 by Gynae Unit lll Lady Willingdon Hospital, offering an enriching learning experience to all participants. Prof. Saima Iqbal was the chief organizer of this workshop.
Our Patron in Chief, Vice Chancellor King Edward Medical University, Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz(S-I) graced the occasion with his insightful address, emphasizing the significance of laparoscopic workshop and cadaveric training for improving the surgical skills. The facilitators were Prof Fauzia umber, Dr. Armaghan and his team. A total of 30 participants (Consultant Gynecologists and Surgeons) attended the workshop. Majority of doctors were consultants and came from Multan, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujranwala and Khushaab. The workshop was structured into three comprehensive sessions:
1. Lectures
2. Hands on Simulators
3. Live surgeries—Hands on experience
Day 1: Lectures and Simulations
The first day of the workshop was dedicated to interactive lectures that covered a wide range of topics:
1. Anatomic considerations in Gynaecological Surgery by Dr. Umair
2. Optimizing surgical tools, ergonomics and safe abdominal access in Gynaecological Laparoscopic Surgery by Dr. Armaghan
3. Tips and tricks for TLH—a jigsaw puzzle technique by Prof. Saima Iqbal
4. Reducing Surgeon’s anxiety: Strategies to prevent complications in Gynaecological surgeries by Prof Fauzia Umber
A 5-station simulation exercise was arranged with simulation exercises on training models to prepare the candidates for day 2 training. They were also familiarization with laparoscopic surgical instruments including ligasure.
Day 2: Hands-On Training in Gynae OT
The second day was focused on hands-on training in Gynae OT, allowing participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge under expert supervision.
The participants were divided into groups and a total of 9 laparoscopic procedures were performed on 2 tables from 8 am to 1 pm. These procedures included:
• Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomies—–3 patients
• Diagnostic laparoscopies—–4 patients
• Bilateral Tubal Ligation (BTL)—2 patients
Each participant had ample opportunity to practice, ensuring an enhanced understanding of gynaecologic laparoscopic techniques. Faculty members and facilitators provided personalized guidance, addressing individual skill gaps and encouraging a supportive learning environment.
The workshop concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony, where participants were recognized for their active participation. Feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the balanced approach of theoretical and practical sessions.
This event marked the beginning of a new era of advanced surgical education at LWH/ KEMU, fostering excellence in training and patient care. Requests were generated for similar courses in future to further enhance the learning opportunities.
