INTRODUCTION OF DEPARTMENT

HISTORY
The Institute of TB & Chest Medicine, a venerable institution since 1920, has been a beacon of excellence in pulmonary care and education. It is one of the oldest medical institutes in the subcontinent. Prof. Dr. Riaz Ali Shah, Ex. Chairperson, had the privilege of being the personal physician of father of the nation, Quaid E Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
In 1946, the institute was awarded “Hassan Masud Suhrwardi Challenge Shield” for the best work in chest diseases in the subcontinent.

DAWN OF A NEW ERA
Since 2023, under the stalwart leadership of Dr. Muhammad Younus, Associate Professor of Pulmonology, who steers a great team, the institute has continued to thrive; following a comprehensive renovation of the Wards, OPD, Offices, MDR TB clinic and Diagnostic Block in 2024 with an estimated cost of 180 Million rupees. The institute provides Out-patient, In-patient and Diagnostic & Interventional Pulmonology (IP) services.
Along With a capacity for 66 in-patients, the institute operates a bustling outpatient department, catering to an impressive 60,000 patients annually. This is a testament to the institute’s commitment to accessibility and quality pulmonary care.
The institute also boasts a modern seminar room with a seating capacity of more than 70 persons; fully equipped with advanced audiovisual facilities; fostering a conducive environment for knowledge sharing and collaboration and also welcoming the prestigious guests from all over the country for last 35 years during the annual 3 days Prof. Abdul Aziz Course on Chest Diseases.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

  1. Early detection, treatment and control of pulmonary tuberculosis and other Respiratory disorders.
  2. To enhance the training of undergraduate & postgraduate students and hand on practice on bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, thoracocentesis, lung biopsies.
  3. To promote the research work in the department.
  4. To improve the team work for better management of patients and arranging multidisciplinary team to meet the motto ALTAPETE  of King Edward Medical University, Lahore.
