The College of Nursing, affiliated with King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Lahore, has a long and distinguished history that dates back to its establishment in 1883. The school of nursing was initially founded to offer a course of instruction and practical experience for young nursing students. Over time, it evolved and expanded, now playing a crucial role in providing nursing education in Pakistan.

The School of Nursing is located on the premises of Mayo Hospital, near the main gate of the hospital, situated on Nisbat Road in Lahore. Mayo Hospital itself is one of the oldest and largest teaching hospitals in Pakistan. It was completed in 1883 and named after Viceroy Edward Mayo. The hospital has grown significantly over the years and now boasts approximately 2800 beds, serving as a major medical facility affiliated with King Edward Medical University.

The school initially aimed to provide nursing education and supervised clinical experience. It has continually adapted and expanded, incorporating modern equipment and up-to-date teaching methods to ensure the best practical and theoretical training for nursing students.

The College of Nursing’s campus consists of a multi-story building that includes the administration section, teaching facilities, and student accommodations. The building is well-equipped with:

  • Eight lecture halls (classrooms) for theoretical learning.
  • Two demonstration halls for practical teaching sessions.
  • A library for academic resources and research.
  • Four well-equipped laboratories for hands-on practice and experiments.
  • An auditorium with a capacity of 1000 students, used for large-scale lectures and events.
  • A Food and Nutrition hall, along with a pantry and kitchen for students and staff.

Additionally, the college has a five-story hostel building for students’ accommodation. The hostel rooms are spacious, well-lit, and ventilated, and the facilities include:

  • Dining rooms and proper kitchen facilities.
  • Clean washing rooms and bathrooms with good drainage systems.
  • Prayer room and ample spaces for relaxation and socializing.
  • A playground for physical education and indoor games.

Other amenities include electricity, water, and gas supply, as well as a visitor’s sitting area to ensure a comfortable living experience for the students.

Originally, the school of nursing could accommodate just 100 students, but after being upgraded to a College of Nursing affiliated with King Edward Medical University, the student intake expanded significantly. The college can now accommodate 900 students in two shifts (morning and evening), with 800 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and 100 students in the Post-RN program.

The College of Nursing continues to be an integral part of King Edward Medical University, shaping the future of nursing education in Pakistan by offering modern facilities and comprehensive training and fostering an environment that promotes both academic excellence and professional development.
