King Edward Medical University Hosts 2-Day International Surgical Conference in Lahore
The Society of Surgeons Pakistan, Lahore Chapter, organized its annual two-day international surgical conference at King Edward Medical University. The inaugural ceremony was honored by Professor Rowan Parkes, President of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, as the chief guest, with Professor Abdul Majeed Chaudhry serving as the special guest. The session was attended by a distinguished assembly of local and international medical experts, including Professor Mahmood Ayyaz, Vice Chancellor of King Edward Medical University; Professor Khalid Masood Gondal, Vice Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Medical University; Professor Asghar Naqi, Principal of Allama Iqbal Medical College; Professor Aamir Zaman Khan; Professor Abrar Ashraf; Professor Ameer Afzal; Professor Ahmad Uzair Qureshi; Professor Muhammad Waris Farooka, President of the Society of Surgeons Pakistan; and Dr. Shahid Farooq, General Secretary of the Society of Surgeons Pakistan.

The Society of Surgeons Pakistan conferred Lifetime Achievement Awards upon Professor Kazi Muhammad Saeed and Professor Kamran Khalid Khawaja in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the medical field. Professional Excellence Awards were also presented to several distinguished surgeons, including Professor Aamir Ali Syed, Major General Professor Farhan Majeed, Dr. Faisal Dar, Professor Irfan Ahmed, Professor Ahsan Manzoor Bhatti, Dr. Umair, Dr. Sheharyar Niazi, Dr. Faisal Haneef, Professor Zarin, Dr. Salman Yusuf, Professor Haroon Javed, Professor Maazul Hassan, and Dr. Tahir Younis.
In his address, Professor Robin Parkes expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him in Pakistan and commended the organizers for hosting a successful conference. He elaborated on the services and achievements of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Vice Chancellor Professor Mahmood Ayyaz highlighted King Edward Medical University’s 164-year legacy of excellence in medical education. He delivered a comprehensive lecture on artificial intelligence and robotic technology in surgery, acknowledging the contributions of the esteemed guests.
The theme of the 2025 conference, “Transforming Surgical Practice in Pakistan through Education and Training,” was introduced. The event aimed to explore advancements in medical sciences and innovations, providing a platform for surgeons to exchange knowledge and experiences. The conference was preceded by 16 workshops facilitated by local and international faculty, including cadaveric and live surgery workshops. During the conference, over 120 lectures were delivered, and more than 110 posters were presented, encompassing various subspecialties of general surgery.
Professor Mahmood Ayyaz praised the efforts of Professor Waris Farooka and his team for successfully organizing the conference. He emphasized that such educational initiatives enhance the institution’s reputation, promote modern medical education trends among students, and provide patients with access to cutting-edge treatment options.
