The 3rd KEMU Sports Medicine Seminar was successfully organized by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, King Edward Medical University in collaboration with the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Mayo Hospital Lahore.
Held under the esteemed patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz, the event embodied his vision of propelling KEMU toward academic and clinical excellence. The seminar focused on the pivotal theme of ‘Injuries in High-Impact Sports’, providing an invaluable platform for professionals to enhance their understanding of the diagnosis, management, and latest advancements in musculoskeletal injury treatment.
Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Prof. Faisal Masood chaired the session. Dr. Asad Abbas Shah served as the Course Director, ensuring a well-structured and insightful academic experience.

A key highlight of the event was the ‘Lifetime Achievement Awards’ conferred by King Edward Medical University upon 25 legendary national sports figures from 10 different sports disciplines. The honourees included Hockey Olympians Akhtar Rasool, Khawaja Muhammad Junaid, Rana Zaheer Uddin Babar, and Ghulam Ghous; Tennis stars Aisam ul Haq and Mehboob Khan; Kabaddi champions Muhammad Shafiq Chishti and Muhammad Sarwar Rana; Wrestling icons Muhammad Inam Butt and Arshad Sattar; Athletics pioneers Anjum Saeed and Salman Iqbal Butt; Rifle shooting expert Javed Shamshad Lodhi; Cycling champion Idrees Ahmad Khwaja; and Karate maestro Muhammad Jahangir. Their contributions to national and international sports were celebrated with great reverence.
The event witnessed an overwhelming attendance of around 300 participants from KEMU, Mayo Hospital, Government College University, Lahore College for Women University, Riphah University, and several other institutions. Attendees included orthopedic residents, physiotherapists, and medical students, all eager to broaden their knowledge in the evolving field of sports medicine.
In his keynote address, Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz, Vice Chancellor KEMU, shared his personal journey as a former hockey team member during his student years. He emphasized the crucial role of preventive and therapeutic strategies in managing sports injuries and highlighted the potential for professional athletes to benefit from the cutting-edge medical expertise available at KEMU and Mayo Hospital Lahore. He extended his gratitude to the renowned sports personalities for honoring the university with their presence.
Prof. Faisal Masood delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the role of orthopedics in diagnosing and treating sports-related injuries, warmly welcoming all participants.
Dr. Mumraiz Naqshband provided a comprehensive overview of various orthopedic procedures and arthroscopic surgical techniques for sports injuries, detailing their applicability in modern sports medicine.
Dr. Asad Abbas Shah, Head of the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Mayo Hospital and a distinguished sports physician, delivered an engaging presentation on the history, significance, and advancements in sports medicine. He shared invaluable insights from his experiences representing Pakistan at various national and international sporting events, addressing participants’ queries with expertise and enthusiasm.
A special commemorative shield was presented to Dr. Asad Abbas Shah on the occasion of his retirement from government service after an illustrious 34 years career. He received a standing ovation, and a eulogy highlighting his remarkable career and contributions to sports medicine was read in his honor.
Tennis legend Aisam ul Haq shared an inspiring account of his journey to international acclaim, expressing deep appreciation for the medical professionals who supported him during injuries. He credited his parents, mentors, and teachers for shaping his success and bringing pride to the nation.
Hockey Olympian Chaudhry Akhtar Rasool conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the organizers for their dedication in recognizing and honoring the contributions of national sports figures. Other distinguished guests also commended KEMU and Mayo Hospital Lahore for their pioneering role in sports medicine and rehabilitation. They acknowledged the visionary leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz in spearheading these invaluable initiatives.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Faisal Masood extended heartfelt thanks to all esteemed guests and participants for their invaluable time and contributions. He gave special recognition to the Course Coordinators, Dr. Mazhar Rafique and Dr. Suhail Niazi, for their unwavering dedication and efforts in organizing the seminar.
The event culminated in a formal award ceremony, where the Chief Guest presented the ‘Lifetime Achievement Awards’ to the honored sports veterans. The seminar concluded with a guided tour of the historic Patiala Block, followed by a luncheon and group photographs, capturing the memorable occasion.
